NORTH STARS - FEB 3/10 - The North Stars have lost three of their last five games. They still lead the SIJHL in wins (36), fewest losses (5), points (73), winning percentage (.890), goals scored (220) and fewest goals allowed (91)....Amassing 23 points in his last 1 games has allowed Trevor Gamache to take both the team and the league lead in scoring. He has 64 points on 22 goals and 42 assists on the year...Ryan Magill (31g-28a-59pts) in second in SIJHL scoring while Jordan Davis (25g-30a-55pts) is third and Mitch Forbes (22g-31a-53pts) is tied for fourth...The team is second on the power play (19.28%) and first on the PK (90.23%)...They are 27-1-1 when scoring first and 9-3 when the opposition does....Of the team's final 11 regular season games, seven will be played away from home.

CJHL RANKINGS: Despite their recent travails the Stars remained nationally ranked in most recent Canadian Jr Hockey League listings that are tabulated in conjunction with the National Hockey League's Central Scouting Service. The SIJHL-leading Stars were tabbed 14th overall for a second straight week in the rankings, which are based upon a variety of factors including the league in which the teams belong to, winning percentage, won-loss record, points and goals for and against. The Spruce Grove Saints (AJHL) remains the No 1 team in the nation for another seven-day stretch. The reigning Royal Bank Cup champion Vernon Vipers (BCHL) are number two overall while the Penticton Vees (BCHL) sit thrid, the defending Dudley-Hewitt Cup trophy holder Kingston Voyageurs are fourth while the Grand Prairie Storm (AJHL) lie fifth.


NORTH STARS - JAN 6/10 - The Stars lead the SIJHL in wins (29), fewest losses (2), points (58), winning percentage (.935), goals scored (178) and fewest goals allowed (70)....Ryan Magill (T-1st-50pts); Mitch Forbes (3rd-49pts), Trevor Gamache (4th-45pts) and Jordan Davis (5th-44pts) are all among the top five scorers in the SIJHL. Randall Hanlan (5g-24a-29pts) is third in points among SIJHL defencemen while Kyle Breukelman (2g-19a-21pts) is fifth and Kevin Hamel (7g-13a-20pts) sits sixth....The team is second on the power play (22.29%) and first on the penalty kill (90.54%)...They are 21-0 when opening the scoring and 8-2 when the opposition does....the Stars next eight games are all on home ice.

 

 

 


NORTH STARS - DEC 8/09 - 

The North Stars acquired Ryan Pearson from the defending Dudley-Hewitt Cup champion Kingston Voyageurs last week while also shipping Brennan Wright to Yarmouth of the MJAH.

 

 

 

 

 

The Stars lead the SIJHL in wins (24), including 18 in a row, fewest losses (1), points (48), winning percentage (.960), goals scored (146) and fewest goals allowed (55)…Mitch Forbes (1st-41pts), Ryan Magill (T-2nd-39pts), Jordan Davis (T-2nd-39pts) and Trevor Gamache (T-4th-37pts) are all among the top five scorers in the SIJHL. Randall Hanlan (5g-21a-26pts) is tied for second in points among SIJHL defencemen…The team is second on the power play (25%) and first on the penalty kill (90.34%)…They are 18-0 when opening the scoring and 6-1 when the opposition does…Stars forward Cody Fraser is representing the league at the CJHL prospects games today and Wednesday in Winkler, Man.


NORTH STARS - NOV 22/09

Continuing his strong run right from the beginning of the season North Stars forward Mitch Forbes remains the leading point producer in the SIJHL. A 19-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Forbes tops the tables averaging two points per game on 16 markers and 22 helpers for 38 points in 20 contests. Forbes has also gotten on the score sheet in eleven consecutive games. In his run he has maintained his two point per game average during his streak scoring seven times and dishing out 14 assists.

TOP 20: The Canadian Junior Hockey League has revealed their most recent top 20 rankings with the North Stars once again being tabbed in the 18th spot overall for a third consecutive week. 

The CJHL will be front and centre next month in Winkler, Man., as that community will be hosting the annual Prospects Challenge Dec. 7-10. The event will include a skills competition as well as a pair of games Dec. 8-9 that will showcase the premier prospects from the 10 respective leagues that comprise the CJHL. The respective team rosters are expected to be announced within the next few days. 

The Stars lead the SIJHL in wins (19), fewest losses (1), points (38), winning percentage (.950), goals scored (117) and fewest goals allowed (47)…Along with leading scorer Mitch Forbes, FWNS's have four other players, Ryan Magill, 2nd; Jordan Davis, 4th; Trevor Gamache, T-5th; and Randall Hanlan, 10th) among the top 10 in point production…The squad is second overall on the power play (23.77%) and first on the penalty kill (89.26%)…They are 12-0 when opening the scoring and 5-1 when the opposition open up the goal scoring…Recent roster moves saw the Stars deal Josh Blacksmith and Alex Cooper to the Temiscaming Royal of the NOJHL for defenceman Rylan Henley, who hails from Longlac, and forward Stephan Gunnar from Shebougamou, QC.


 NORTH STARS - NOV 12/09

Rookie goaltender Jayme Brattengeier leads the league in GAA sporting a stingy 2.04 average while posting a 5-0 record. He also has a .901 save percentage. Sitting third in goals-against average is netminder Guillaume Piche. He has allowed just 2.47 goals against per game and a decent .909 save percentage while continuing to lead the entire SIJHL in wins with 11.

Defenceman Kyle Breukelman brought back a silver medal from the World Jr. A Hockey Challenge in Summerisde, P.E.I. as he was part of Team Canada West squad that finished second at the event. Congratulations Kyle! Meanwhile North Stars athletic trainer Meggan McLeod has a gold medal to her credit as she aided Team Ontario Red in a similar trainer’s capacity helping them capture the Canadian national women’s under-18 championship in Surrey, B.C.

TOP 20: The latest Canadian Junior Hockey League top 20 rankings were announced earlier this week with the SIJHL-leading North Stars being the only league club that was recognized. The Stars were listed in 18th spot overall for a second consecutive week. 

Three wins in as many road games last week saw the North Stars solidify their hold a top the SIJHL standings. The Stars, winners of 10 in a row, lead the league with 32 points while boasting a 16-1 overall record. They now lead second place Dryden by six points as the Ice Dogs are currently 12-3-2 on the campaign. 

TOP SCORERS: The duo of Mitch Forbes (15g-19-34ts) and Ryan Magill (15-13-28ts) continue to sit one-two respectively in league point production. Rounding out the top five are Colton Kennedy (13g-14a-27pts) of Fort Frances and Jordan Davis (12g-14a-26pts) of the Stars while Dryden’s Kevin Burton (15g-10a-25pts) and the Star's Trevor Gamache (8g-17a-25pts) finish off the list. A five-point game in Fort Frances this past Sunday has helped defenceman Randall Hanlan move into a share of the scoring lead among SIJHL blueliners. His 19 points on five tallies and 14 helpers has brought him level with Sioux Lookout’s A.J. Wensley (6g-13a-19pts) as the duo share the offensive lead among SIJHL D-men. Jon Mitchell (4g-14a-18pts) of Dryden, the Flyers Darnell Ferland (5g-9a-14pts) and the Stars Kevin Hamel (5g-8a-13pts)complete the top five in that category. 

The North Stars lead the league in almost every key category in the SIJHL including goals scored (98) and the fewest allowed (40)…They are the only unbeaten team on home ice at 5-0. They also top the table in road wins with 11…The club has five players among the top 10 points producers in the league…They have 12 players with 10 of more points already this season and every regular skater on the roster, but one, has a goal to his credit…The Stars are first on the penalty kill at 88.37% and are 2nd on the PP at 22.43%.


 NORTH STARS - OCT 8/09

League-leading scorer Mitch Forbes has produced in every game he has played in. The crafty forward has recorded points in eight straight games to start the campaign scoring nine times and registering an additional nine assists.

North Stars teammates Jordan Davis (6g-8a-14pts) and Ryan Magill (5g-7a-12pts) are second and third respectively in SIJHL point production. Magill is also riding a five-game scoring streak. Magill was named the league’s Sportop Marketing Player-of-the-Month award recipient for September. In just two games last month following his return from tryouts for the Lakehead University men’s hockey team the 20-year-old Magill had six points on two goals and four assists. He is currently third in SIJHL scoring and has points in five consecutive contests.

Goaltender Jamie Brattengeier of the Stars leads the SIJHL in goals-against average at 1.50. His netminding partner Guillaume Piche is next at 2.33.

The Stars improved to 2-0 on home ice this season on Wednesday coming from behind for a 2-1 win over the Wolverines. Third period goals by Randall Hanlan and the game-winner by Mitch Forbes lifted the club to a SIJHL-best 6-1 record overall. They lead the league on the penalty kill at 88.89%, but are only fifth overall on the power play at 18.52%.

In the most recent Canadian Jr. Hockey League Top 15 rankings the Fort William North Stars remained listed nationally being tabbed 14th overall.

It was also announced this week that the Stars' trainer Meggan McLeod will be behind the bench with the U18 Womens Team Ontario in Kelowna, BC in November. 


NORTH STARS - SEPT 30/09

After competing as the visiting team in their first four games the North Stars will play their home opener this Wednesday against new cross-town rival K&A at the Fort William Gardens. Watch for the new-look jersey's being worn by the team! The North Stars' biggest fan Cassie (seen here wearing the clubs new away jersey) will be celebrating her birthday with a bunch of her friends at the Stars' home opener!

Rookie forward Sam Dubinsky is tied for fifth in SIJHL scoring with five points while defenceman Kevin Hamel is knotted for eighth with four points joining Mitch Forbes and Jordan Davis among the top 10 SIJHL point producers.

The Stars are second in the league on both the power play at 21.43% (6-28) and penalty kill at 88.89% (32-36). GO STARS GO!!

3 North Star Players Invited WJAC

Okotoks, AB - Sept24/09 - Hockey Canada and the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) announced today the 40 players invited to attend an Evaluation Camp for Team Canada West in preparation for the 2009 World Junior A Challenge. The Okotoks Oilers and Alberta Junior Hockey League will host the three-day evaluation camp at the Centennial Arena in Okotoks, Alberta from September 27th – 29th, 2009. The SIJHL will be represented by the Fort William North Stars' defencman Kyle Breukelman along with forwards Sam Dubinsky and Casey Dean.

The top 40 players from the five western leagues of the Canadian Junior Hockey League have been invited to participate in the evaluation camp for an opportunity to earn a position on the Team Canada West roster. Team Canada West will include the top 22 players from the BC Hockey League (BCHL), the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) and the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL).

The BCHL will be represented by 13 players at the upcoming camp, while the AJHL has 10 reps, the MJHL 8, 7 for the SJHL and 2 for the SIJHL round out the 40 man roster
